Biome Lifestyle knows that being a conscientious consumer does not necessarily mean you are a hippy! We also know that by aspiring to a comfortable and stylish home, does not mean that you do not care about the consequences of consumerism. Biome Lifestyle aims to finally unite ‘style’ and ‘eco’ in the home, which will ultimately help our world.
Founded in 2005, Biome Lifestyle is committed to providing contemporary eco-friendly and ethical home furnishings and gifts. We believe we can address the environmental concerns of the discerning buyer by offering organic, recycled, sustainable and ethical homewares that do not compromise on style. Manufactured from a variety of materials, and crafted with care, our high-quality products each have a unique and interesting story.
We respect our world and make every effort to cause minimum environmental impact during production, packing and distribution. To encourage British design and keep transport emissions to a minimum, the majority of Biome Lifestyle’s products are UK-sourced. All wooden products are Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) approved and made in the UK. Biome Lifestyle is a small company, just trying to ‘do the right thing’. We won’t change the world; but we aim to take a step in the right direction by offering products produced with a minimum social and environmental footprint. We also realise that we have many, many more steps to take…
A biome is a ‘natural habitat’ (pronounced ‘by-ohm’). As Biome Lifestyle provides natural products for the home – the name Biome Lifestyle was created.
Major biomes include deserts, forests, grasslands, tundra, and several types of aquatic environments. In fact, the world itself is one large biome. Each biome consists of many ecosystems whose communities have adapted to the small difference in climate and the environment inside the biome.
All living things are closely related to their environment. Any change in one part of an environment, like an increase or decrease of a species of animals, plants or changes in the weather and atmosphere causes a ripple effect of change through other parts of the environment.
Biome Lifestyle provides natural and eco home products which aim to be sensitive to the environment - from the environment they were made in to the environment or world as a whole.
When Alexandra Bishop (formerly Bramham) launched Biome Lifestyle in December 2005 there were three inspirations driving the company: the environment, good design and the Internet, and each still remains a key pillar defining everything the company does.
The inspiration for Biome Lifestyle grew when Alexandra and her friends started on the property ladder. As she says, “I started to take note of where and how furnishings were made. Somehow it seemed wrong to reap the planet of its precious resources simply for a beautiful table, but, at the same time, I didn’t want to sacrifice my stylish ideals for the more unattractive eco alternatives.
“This is when I started to notice that there really are few stylish choices for conscientious consumers, either on the high street or at trade fairs.” So the hunt for beautiful yet environmentally friendly products began.
In early 2005, Alexandra followed her dream and began to hunt for beautiful yet environmentally friendly products. After searching the web for inspiration, visiting trade shows and talking to designers, Alexandra soon had a range of fantastic products to offer like-minded consumers.
Biome Lifestyle was then launched as a desirable compromise for those who want to live in a stylish home whilst minimising their impact on the environment. The two concepts of style and eco previously had long had a marked distinction, until now.
Building on Biome Lifestyle’s offering is an ongoing process with each product handpicked solely by Alexandra. Whilst each product is chosen for its eco credentials and for its stylish design, there also lies a unique and interesting story behind each item, telling you exactly where the products came from, how it was made and the materials used.
Alexandra says, “Biome Lifestyle prides itself on unique and carefully crafted products, many handmade, which have not been mass-produced. The range of products will continue to expand but our key is to always retain individuality and exclusiveness.”
We’re all looking to introduce conscientious living into our lifestyles and with eco chic products available for the whole home, it’s a lifestyle change that is now even easier than before, thanks to Biome Lifestyle.
